Gold Nuggets #1

800.00

'How nice would it be (or could it be) if we could 'grow' our own gold, instead of mining it. The possible end of social inequalities and less environmental impact or would it?' This questioning formed the concept for this bronze sculpture.

This sculpture is a cast of bottle tree seed pods, also known as the Kurrajong tree or Illawarra Flame tree in Australia. The original seed pods were found dry in Portugal with the golden seeds looking like nuggets, tightly tucked with padding in their pods.

The pods were cast in bronze using the 'lost wax' casting process. The model is made in wax, covered in a ceramic shell acting as a mould. The wax is melted when the bronze is poured, flushed out of the mould to make room for the bronze and therefore lost.

The outside of the pods is patinated. The inside of the pods, the rims and seeds are polished. The sculpture is free standing (i.e. not set on a solid base) so you can position it the way you prefer.

The sculpture measures 15cm high and the base is 8×10cm.

Unique piece.
